The Cowichan River is one of the worlds best fly fishing rivers.

Although the fishing has deteriorated somewhat (in recent years) it is still a superior fishing river, as other excellent fly fishing rivers have deteriorated likewise.

Bring your own boat and fish the lake, for a chance at a Rainbow, Brown, or a Kokanee, or venture up to Nitnat Lake (north of Cowichan lake) and test your skills against a Cutthroat. You will need to make sure that you purchase a fishing license, before you fish anywhere on the lake .

For the purist, nothing but fishing the river will suffice. You will need to visit in the fall, winter, or spring; the water is too hot to fish during the summer months. Late March and early April the brown trout especially are available (at the start of the season) The western march brown is likely the most important hatch, especially in the upper regions of the river.
